In her long career as a development expert with the United Nations, Usha Mishra Hayes has worked in some of the most demanding situations across Asia and Africa. Her challenge was to build an overarching social protection system to insulate the economically vulnerable against the stabs of poverty and offer them opportunities to improve their lives.
With a master’s degree in Modern History from Jawaharlal Nehru University, she joined the UN
team quite early and has been on the long road to Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Cambodia, Tanzania,
Afghanistan, Nepal…
Mishra Hayes has been made a Commander (Thipden) in the Royal Order of Sahametri by the Government of Cambodia for her work on ASEAN social protection. She tweets @UshaMishra.
